Finger Save Goalkeeper Gloves Or Non Finger Save – That Is The Question

Finger save gloves have sparked massive debate across the goalkeeping world for years.

On one hand, the pros are clear: built-in finger spines offer extra support, peace of mind, and help prevent painful backward hyperextension when facing heavy shots. The cons? They add rigidity, restrict your hand’s natural movement, and reduce that crucial "feel" for the ball.

Personally, I am not a fan of finger save gloves—and here is why. Over my 10 years as a professional goalkeeper, running J4K for over 25 years, and helping thousands of goalkeepers, I have heard too many horror stories where a keeper wore finger save gloves for years, then decided to wear non-finger save gloves, and then had their fingers broken when trying to save a shot in a game. And here is why I believe this happened.

The human mind is a wonderfully complex thing. Every time you wear finger save gloves and make a save, the glove’s rigid spine does the heavy lifting for your hands. Because the glove handles the impact, your fingers don't send the necessary signals to your brain. Over time, your fingers actually get weaker and weaker because they rely on the gear to do the work.

When you wear non-finger save gloves, the millisecond the ball hits your hand and forces your fingers back, your brain instantly sends a signal to tense and react. That micro-reaction naturally strengthens your hand and finger joints session after session. Without that millisecond movement sent to the brain, the fingers never get properly conditioned.

That is why at J4K, if a goalkeeper purchases J4K finger save gloves, we always recommend they wear non-finger save gloves in training. This trains their mind and fingers to work as one, building real, natural hand strength. Then, when they wear finger save gloves in a game situation, they have naturally strong fingers combined with that extra bit of matchday support.

So what are your thoughts on finger save gloves?

Do you wear them for every session, save them for matches, or skip them entirely?
